Title of Document: EVALUATION OF SCAB RESISTANCE QUANTITATIVE TRAIT LOCI (QTL) EFFECTS ON WHEAT Jing Kang, M.S., 2010 Directed By: Associate Professor Dr. José Costa, Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) of wheat (Triticum aestivum), caused by Fusarium graminearum, is a disease that periodically strikes the mid-Atlantic region of the USA. Breeding for resistant wheat cultivar is an effective method of disease control. McCormick, a genotype adapted to the mid-Atlantic region, was used in a backcross program with the Chinese cultivar Ning7840. Eight Near-Isogenic Lines (NIL) were developed by marker-assisted backcrossing. Three FHB resistance QTL on chromosomes 3BS, 2DL, and 5A were introgressed from non-adapted Ning7840 into the elite soft red winter wheat McCormick. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of QTL singly and in combination on FHB resistance. The 3BS+2DL NIL showed higher resistance and lower deoxynivalenol content than other NIL in both field and greenhouse studies. This suggests that the 3BS+2DL NIL can be used in the mid-Atlantic region to breed for improved FHB resistance. EVALUATION OF SCAB RESISTANCE QUANTITATIVE TRAIT LOCI (QTL) EFFECTS ON WHEAT.

New quantitative trait loci in wheat for flag leaf resistance to Stagonospora nodorum blotch.
Stagonospora nodorum blotch (SNB) is a significant disease in some wheat-growing regions of the world. Resistance in wheat to Stagonospora nodorum is complex, whereby genes for seedling, flag leaf, and glume resistance are independent. The aims of this study were to identify alternative genes for flag leaf resistance, to compare and contrast with known quantitative trait loci (QTL) for SNB resi...

Fusarium head blight (scab) is one of the most widespread and damaging diseases of wheat, causing grain yield and quality losses and production of harmful mycotoxins. Development of resistant varieties is hampered by lack of effective resistance sources in the tetraploid wheat primary gene pool. Here we dissected the genetic basis of resistance in a new durum wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. durum...
متن کاملEvaluation of the effects of five QTL regions on Fusarium head blight resistance and agronomic traits in spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)
Fusarium head blight (FHB) is an important disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The aim of this study was to determine the effects of quantitative trait locus (QTL) regions for resistance to FHB and estimate their effects on reducing FHB damage to wheat in Hokkaido, northern Japan. We examined 233 F(1)-derived doubled-haploid (DH) lines from a cross between 'Kukeiharu 14' and 'Sumai 3' to d...
متن کاملEffects of Marker Density, Number of Quantitative Trait Loci and Heritability of Trait on Genomic Selection Accuracy
The success of genomic selection mainly depends on the extent of linkage disequilibrium (LD) between markers and quantitative trait loci (QTL), number of QTL and heritability (h2) of the traits. The extent of LD depends on the genetic structure of the population and marker density. This study was conducted to determine the effects of marker density, level of heritability, number of QTL, and to ...
متن کاملQuantitative Trait Loci (QTL) Analysis Reveals Both Broad-Spectrum and Isolate-Specific QTL for Scab Resistance in an Apple Progeny Challenged with Eight Isolates of Venturia inaequalis.
ABSTRACT The major scab resistance gene Vf, extensively used in apple breeding programs, was recently overcome by the new races 6 and 7 of the fungal pathogen Venturia inaequalis. New, more durable, scab resistance genes are needed in apple breeding programs. F(1) progeny derived from the cross between partially resistant apple cv. Discovery and apple hybrid 'TN10-8' were inoculated in the gree...
